When Barbara Acee mentions to friends and family that her daughter works as an organizer for a day laborer organization, she often notices an uncomfortable pause in the conversation. “When people make the usual complaints about immigrants causing high crime rates and crowded hospitals, I can tell that they’re just repeating what they hear on the news,” said Barbara, a Portland mother of two. “They’re told to view immigrants as enemies.”
